Episode 6
Strength through unity

Wednesday, we went to the park – me, the kids, my friend Soraya, and her dog Maxi. She is a home caregiver for elderly people. Like me, she is in survival mode.

Meanwhile, Soraya and I talked non-stop:
“Lucie, how do you manage alone with the kids? And you, Soraya? Don’t you feel too isolated? You can’t even afford to go out for a coffee! I could watch the little ones when you work at the store on Sundays. Maybe we could take care of Maxi when you’re overwhelmed with work? I have some leftover zucchini spaghetti from yesterday – why don’t you come over for dinner?”
Between bites of pasta, my mouth still full, I suddenly shouted: EUREKAAAAAA! A piece of zucchini went flying and landed on the little one’s head. We burst into laughter: “What if we lived together!? We could cut down on rent and split the bills.”
We rushed to a real estate website, and our mental calculators kicked into gear: A two-bedroom apartment, a tiny balcony for Maxi, a decent energy rating – all for €1,900. This could help us save a little money and break the loneliness that poverty forces upon us.

On Saturday, our quirky little family is heading off on an adventure – piling into Soraya’s car for a trip to the Vintage Mo(o)d thrift store run by the Red Cross in Livange. We are hoping to find some good bargains to furnish our future palace.
At the Luxembourg Red Cross, nearly 40,000 purchases were recorded in social grocery stores in 2024.
We need your help to continue the solidarity movement in 2025.
Thank you
