After India, Nepal is experiencing a devastating wave of COVID-19. According to reports, the number of positive cases has been spiralling out of control since mid-April, reaching more than 9,000 cases daily, with disastrous situations particularly in the capital, Kathmandu. “The images of people amassed in front of health facilities that can no longer take care of them, as well as the smoke escaping from funeral pyres, remind us of the dramatic developments in India,” warns Myriam Jacoby, in charge of activities in Nepal at the Luxembourg Red Cross.
After launching an appeal for donations to support the Indian Red Cross on 28 April, the Luxembourg Red Cross is extending its appeal to Nepal, where its teams are mobilised to organise an emergency response. Those wishing to support the Luxembourg Red Cross by a donation by bank transfer (IBAN LU52 1111 0000 1111 0000; Reference: “Urgence Nepal Covid Emergency”) or online :
In 2020, the Luxembourg Red Cross’ humanitarian teams had already intervened in emergency to fight the spread of Covid-19 in the district of Dhading, supporting the Nepalese Red Cross in setting up a quarantine centre and self-isolation posts. They set up hand-washing stations and sanitary equipment.
To help the population cope with this very difficult situation, training sessions on psychological support have been launched and an emergency fund created for families in extremely precarious situations due to the pandemic.
