Start of the new awareness campaign for the World Hepatitis Day July 28

On World Hepatitis Day, Wednesday July 28, 2021: “Get tested for free against viral hepatitis.” Screenings are carried out on the forecourt of Luxembourg Station from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the DIMPS van.

World Hepatitis Day is a reminder of the existence of silent viral infections, which, if left untreated, can lead to cirrhosis of the liver.

The most common viruses that cause hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

While hepatitis A is self-limiting, hepatitis B and C are often chronic and can lead to liver cancer.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent hepatitis B, but there is no vaccination for hepatitis C.

The only way to find out whether you have been in contact with the hepatitis C virus is to get tested, which also allows you to receive adequate care if the hepatitis C virus is detected.

It is recommended to get tested, if you:

have a family member or partner with chronic viral hepatitis ;
have had blood contact before the 1990s or in a country outside the European Union: transfusion, surgery, dental care, tattoos, piercings etc. ;
have snorted or injected drugs even once in your entire life, or been in a relationship with someone who has or does.

Testing for viral hepatitis B and C can be done:

via a doctor (general practitioner or specialist) who will issue a prescription;
at the Service National des Maladies Infectieuses of the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg.

Hepatitis C screening can also be done by a rapid, anonymous and free screening test:

At the HIV Berodung service of the Red Cross: Mondays and Wednesdays from 5pm to 7pm
At the Centre LGBTIQ+ CIGALE: Thursdays from 12:30pm to 2:30pm
At DIMPS: on Wednesday 28 July from 11am to 3pm on the station square.
