On Friday 3 February, the Luxembourg and Niger Red Cross celebrated their long-standing collaboration by inaugurating their new logistics warehouse in Niamey, thanks to the support of the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign & European Affairs.
One year after the laying of the foundation stone by Franz Fayot, Minister for Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, the 600m2 warehouse was officially inaugurated in the presence of Laouan Magagi, Minister for Humanitarian Action and Disaster Management of Niger, Christophe Schiltz, Director of the Luxembourg Cooperation, Manuel Tonnar, Director General of LuxDev, Ali Bandiaré, President of the Niger Red Cross and Rémi Fabbri, Director of Humanitarian Aid of the Luxembourg Red Cross.
The new infrastructure will strengthen the capacities of the Niger Red Cross, which will now be able to store emergency kits and shelter materials in good conditions. This logistical warehouse will allow the storage of materials to build up to 1,500 emergency shelters (Sahel Shelter) at one time. It complements secondary warehouses in high-risk areas such as Diffa and Maradi, to considerably reduce the response time following an emergency.
Thanks to this logistics centre, funded by the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign & European Affairs, the Niger Red Cross will be able to respond efficiently to the most urgent needs for humanitarian shelter and sanitation of populations affected by armed conflicts or natural disasters.
