HUMAN IN WAR

What does war mean to you? Human suffering, cruelty? Have you thought about those who have been affected by war, either directly or indirectly?
Although war seems inevitable, there are ways of reducing its inhumanity.
Are you ready to go behind the scenes of war and meet those involved?

Episode 1 – Humanity in the midst of chaos

International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules designed to limit the effects of armed conflict. History has taught us that conflicts and wars seem inevitable, and that people who are not or are no longer taking part in hostilities must be protected.

Episode 2 – Commitment to protection

The obligation to make IHL known is based on the idea that a good knowledge of its rules is an essential factor in its effective application. Incorporating the study of IHL into military training programmes is the basic measure provided for by the treaties to ensure that the armed forces, who are primarily responsible for its application, are familiar with it.

Episode 3 – Obligations to respect

All countries and other parties to an armed conflict have an obligation to respect and ensure respect for international humanitarian law in all circumstances. They must use their influence to prevent and stop violations of this body of law, and refrain from encouraging other parties to commit violations.

Episode 4 – On a mission for humanity

The mission of humanitarians in times of armed conflict is to protect the civilian population and infrastructure. Their work involves alleviating the suffering of victims, providing medical care and guaranteeing access to humanitarian aid.
