Declaration of Human Rights: the right to property

10 May 2024

On December 10 last year, we began a series on Human Rights. While everyone talks about them, few of us really know what they are and what they stand for.

Article 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that the right to property is a human right. In other words, its purpose is to ensure that individuals are not deprived of their property arbitrarily, and that states cannot abuse their power to confiscate citizens’ property without just cause.

Article 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

  1. Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.
  2. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of their property.

The Red Cross is naturally committed to defending Human Rights.
This commitment was reinforced in 2022 with the signing of the national “Business and Human Rights” Pact.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the reference documents of the Code of Conduct and Ethics of the Luxembourg Red Cross.
