The Luxembourg Red Cross is nevertheless, calling on the resident population to show solidarity with the most vulnerable, under the motto Hëlleft eis Hëllefen. Red Cross teams remain present on the ground, they are more mobilized than ever, and continue to work to protect and support those in need.
Red Cross staff and volunteers are focusing all their energy on finding ways to continue to carry out their missions in the best way possible, while following the instructions of the competent authorities to limit the spread of the epidemic.
Healthcare professionals are of course on the front line, working with the sick and the injured, as well as those suffering from addiction. Others are also taking action by distributing meals on wheels to refugee homes, social services, counselling services for struggling children and families, psychological and therapeutic support services, social groceries, “maisons relais” and crèches that have remained open for the children of health workers, or to homes where children who cannot return to their families live.
It was in this spirit of acting for the dignity of those who need them most that the decision was taken not to organise our annual donation month. It is the very first time that this event is cancelled, an event that has taken place every year since the end of the Second World War. Another national solidarity event may be organised later in the year if the public health situation allows.
The management of the Luxembourg Red Cross is fully aware of the consequences that this decision will eventually have on the funding of some services, which are particularly dependent on the funds usually collected in April. But the priority of priorities is – and will remain – to protect the most vulnerable, and even more so in the midst of this pandemic.
All those who wish to help the Luxembourg Red Cross to continue its action can do so by sending a donation to IBAN LU52 1111 0000 1111 0000.
