The EU4HEALTH project, funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health, aims to provide access to psychological first aid and psychosocial support for people affected by the crisis in Ukraine and other concerned countries, and to build the capacity of staff and volunteers working with people fleeing the crisis in Ukraine. It also aims to enhance the skills of staff, volunteers and frontline workers involved in helping people fleeing the crisis in Ukraine.
As part of EU4HEALTH, the Luxembourg Red Cross organised 11 Psychological First Aid (PFA) training sessions from March to June 2024, during which 147 staff (graduate educators, social workers, psychologists, nurses, administrative and technical teams, etc.) were trained. This training introduces participants to the basic elements of psychological first aid.
Psychological first aid is a simple but powerful way of helping someone in distress. It is a way of helping that involves paying attention to the reactions of the person in distress, actively listening and, if necessary, providing practical help to remedy immediate problems and basic needs. Acquiring PFA skills and understanding reactions to crises not only enables the responder to help others, but also to apply these same skills to their own personally difficult times.
After the summer break, psychological first aid training will resume in September.
