Human rights: what are articles 3, 4 & 5 about?

10 January 2024

On December 10 last year, we began a series of articles on Human Rights. While everyone talks about them, few of us really know what they are and what they stand for.

Articles 3 to 5 set out the fundamental rights of every individual, namely to live in freedom and not to fear for their life:

  • Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person.
  • Article 4: No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.
  • Article 5: No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

The Red Cross is naturally committed to defending Human Rights. This commitment was reinforced in 2022 with the signing of the national “Business and Human Rights” Pact. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the reference documents of the Code of Conduct and Ethics of the Luxembourg Red Cross.
