In recent days, the intensification of the conflict in Lebanon has plunged the country into an even deeper humanitarian crisis. Several hundred people have died, and thousands have been forced to flee their homes. The teams of the ICRC and the Lebanese Red Cross are responding to an extremely critical situation.
Since October 2023, Lebanon has been facing a resurgence of hostilities, particularly in the south of the country. Recent developments have exacerbated an already critical situation, further deteriorating living conditions for the population. Over the past few months, the humanitarian impact has been considerable, with several thousand people killed or injured and more than 100,000 displaced. Civilian infrastructure has suffered significant damage, disrupting essential services.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), present in Lebanon since 1967, has significantly strengthened its operations. For example, in the health sector, the ICRC has provided medicines and supplies to 23 health facilities, established emergency stocks for 2,000 patients, and trained 800 healthcare professionals in emergency situations. The organization has also distributed food parcels to more than 45,000 people to meet immediate food needs. Access to clean water being crucial, the ICRC has repaired 15 pumping stations, benefiting 565,000 people, and installed 10 large water storage tanks.
In line with its mission and principles, the Red Cross maintains constant dialogue with the parties in conflict to promote respect for international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians.
Even before the recent intensification, the ICRC planned to scale up its actions. With the recent deterioration of the situation, support for field teams is becoming necessary to help civilian victims.
