The “Wanteraktioun” (WAK), or Winter Action, is a vital humanitarian initiative aimed at protecting homeless people from the risks associated with extreme winter temperatures, particularly the dangers of hypothermia.
Running from 15 November 2024 to 15 April 2025, this action offers daytime reception from 12 pm to 4 pm and nighttime reception from 7 pm to 23pm, ensuring constant shelter and support for those in need.
Organised since 1 January 2021, by Dräieck a.s.b.l, which brings together three partners: Hëllef um Terrain (HUT), Luxembourg Red Cross, and Inter-Actions, in collaboration with the Ministry of Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees and the Greater Region, the WAK aims to provide temporary accommodation, meals, access to sanitary facilities, and services such as nursing care to meet the primary needs of homeless people.
Field professional teams work 7 days a week during the winter months to ensure access to showers, hygiene products, hot meals, to offer a place to rest, socio-educational activities, emergency clothing, and social follow-up and guidance services as needed.
Field coordination is open from 11.30 am to 4.00 pm: registering beneficiaries, organising individual social follow-ups, referrals to specialised services if necessary, and planning nursing care are part of the daily missions.
The day centre, open daily from 12 am to 4.00 pm, offers a welcoming space where beneficiaries can have a hot meal at noon and rest. On-site teams handle meal preparation and distribution, cleaning of dishes and kitchen equipment, and support the educational team in organising occasional activities that enrich the users’ day.
The night shelter, also open daily, welcomes beneficiaries from 7.00 pm to 23 pm. Beyond meal preparation and distribution, teams ensure the cleaning of kitchen equipment, distribution of hygiene items, and provide close support to the educational team to better meet users’ needs and offer them a warm and secure welcome.
The WAK closes its doors daily from 09:00 to 11:30 and from 16:00 to 19:00, in order to
to clean the premises.
The volunteer team of Dräieck a.s.b.l also plays a very important role. Their mobilisation alongside field professionals is one of the conditions that ensures the smooth running of the WAK. The caring and warm atmosphere that volunteers help to create through their dynamism and motivation also benefits those in need.
“Winter is a time when solidarity takes on its full meaning. Thanks to the commitment and generosity of our volunteers, we can offer much more than just shelter to homeless people. Their attentive presence and dedication create a space of human warmth and respect, bringing comfort to those present at the Wanteraktioun. Together, we ensure that no one is forgotten.” — Stéphanie Neff, coordinator of the WAK Day Centre.
