In Niger in Tillabéri, insecurity poses a real threat to our teams, who must respect strict rules to be able to reach the most vulnerable populations in the country. Since Covid-19, we also implement health security measures.
Despite all these obstacles, we continue to help the people fleeing violence. More than 6500 people are internally displaced. We already managed to distribute more than 500 emergency shelters, 500 latrines and 500 hygiene kits in Tillaberi, together with the International Committee of the Red Cross, in addition to 540 shelters in Maradi. We took special protection and prevention measures in this endeavour. Other distributions will follow in Déssa, another city of Tillabéri region, thanks to the support of the European Union.
Thanks to the support of Ministry of Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development of Luxembourg, the Niger Red-Cross was able to set up hand washing devices in schools and in public spaces in Niamey, capital of Niger.
We also trained volunteers and staff on the construction of emergency shelters, with the support of the Luxembourg Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs. The shelters will host Nigeriens who returned from Burkina Faso and need to quarantine, as requested by the measures taken by the government of Niger in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
