Psychological First Aid: the Luxembourg Red Cross continues to train its teams

25 March 2025

Since March 2024, the Luxembourg Red Cross has trained 340 employees and volunteers in Psychological First Aid (PFA) through 26 training sessions.

his initiative, essential for the well-being of people in distress, is part of the EU4HEALTH project, which aims to provide timely and effective support to populations affected by the crisis in Ukraine and its repercussions.

What is Psychological First Aid?

PFA is a simple yet essential approach to supporting individuals in distress. It enables responders to adopt the right reflexes in crisis situations by focusing on active listening, assessing emotional state, and directing individuals toward appropriate assistance when needed. It also provides immediate practical support to help reduce the psychological impact of traumatic events.

Why train in Psychological First Aid?

Red Cross employees and volunteers often face situations of psychological distress, such as disasters, conflicts, and poverty.

Training in PFA equips them to:

  • • assess distress situations;
  • • recognize common reactions to crises;
  • • approach and support individuals experiencing psychological distress;
  • • understand how to provide assistance to those in need;
  • • deliver immediate emotional and practical support.

These skills are invaluable in offering better support to individuals in distress. The Luxembourg Red Cross remains committed to providing humane and caring assistance.
