Following the floods in the Ahrweiler region last week, our German neighbours asked for help in dealing with the repercussions of the natural disaster. As a result, the Ambulance Service of the Luxembourg Red Cross responded to the request of the Corps grand-ducal d’incendie et de secours (CGDIS) by sending five rescue workers and two ambulances.
The joint team of 23 men and women from the CGDIS and the Luxembourg Red Cross was engaged for various missions on site. The Red Cross team immediately helped evacuate a hospital that had lost its electricity and water supply. On the second day, the Luxembourg Red Cross evacuated a sports centre and took care of and transported people in need of care and elderly people out of the disaster area to suitable facilities.
On Sunday 18 July, the Red Cross took part in the reconnaissance in the affected villages and in giving first aid to the caregivers on the spot (caregivers who suffered from a feeling of faintness during the works, but also citizens ….).
The Luxembourg Red Cross mission on site lasted until Wednesday 21 July. At the same time, the Luxembourg Red Cross continued and will continue its support in Luxembourg – as you can read here: The Luxembourg Red Cross helps people affected by the floods
The Luxembourg Red Cross’ Solidarity Fund provides financial assistance to vulnerable individuals and families whose income is insufficient or non-existent, including during natural disasters, to meet their basic needs such as food, shelter, health care, and the acquisition of objects essential to their daily lives.
The Red Cross Solidarity Fund, which is financed by donations, makes it possible to provide emergency financial aid to people facing crises or accidents in their lives, where other aid is not available.
