8 May, the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, is dedicated to the staff and the volunteers of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. They support vulnerable people and families day in day out, in Luxembourg and across the globe, in a context made even more complex by the pandemic.
The health situation has also had economic consequences in Luxembourg. Since last spring we have seen an increase in the needs of our beneficiaries. It is through the activities of the Luxembourg Red Cross that our staff and volunteers can support the affected individuals and families.
Michel Simonis, Director General of the Luxembourg Red Cross, explains:
“The health situation is extremely difficult for everyone, but especially for those who are the most vulnerable, their families and friends and of course for those, like our staff and volunteers, who are confronted with the disease and distress every day, through their multiple activities.” He continues: “But the commitment of our volunteers and staff has not waned. On the contrary, they continue to support the people most affected by the social consequences of the pandemic through the activities of the Luxembourg Red Cross or are involved in fundraising activities, such as the “Mois du Don”, in order to have the means to carry out our aid and support activities.”
Together, our commitment is #unstoppable!
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is made up of 192 national societies with approximately 14 million staff and volunteers, the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) and the IFRC (International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent). It is estimated that one in every 636 people in the world is a Red Cross or Red Crescent volunteer or staff member.
