Selftest

A self-test gives easy access to HIV testing. You can buy these in pharmacies or at Cactus supermarkets and carry them out alone, without the presence of a health professional, at home or elsewhere.

In order to ensure easy access to HIV self-tests, you may order the self-test free of charge directly from HIV Berodung.
You can take advantage of this offer by simply requesting it by phone on 2755-4500 or by e-mail: hivberodung@croix-rouge.lu.

Before carrying out a self-test: It is essential to read the instructions for use and the information sheet.

Prepare yourself for the fact that in a few minutes’ time you will have an HIV test result.

First, consider who you can talk to if your test is positive.

  • Unit 20 of the Infectious Diseases Department at the CHL can be contacted 24 hours a day on 4411 8348. A nurse and/or an infectious disease doctor will be able to answer your questions.
  • At the HIV Berodung service of the Red Cross, a psychologist can supervise you between 8am and 12am and between 1pm and 5pm.

In order for the result of the self-test to confirm the absence of infection, it must be carried out 12 weeks after the last exposure.

If your exposure was less than 72 hours ago: there is an emergency treatment called PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis), which greatly reduces the risk of HIV infection. To benefit from it, you must go without delay to the CHL Service National des Maladies Infectieuses at 4 rue Barblé, Luxembourg-Strassen

If your exposure was more than 6 weeks ago but less than 3 months ago, we advise you to visit a doctor and/or to have a free and anonymous blood test at:

Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg

Infectious Diseases Department (2nd floor)

STI/HIV Consultation – Unit 20
4, rue Barblé, L-1210 Luxembourg
7 days a week, 24 hours a day

If your exposure was more than 3 months ago and there has been no other exposure within that time, the absence of HIV infection is confirmed.
