Giving clothes to help those in need
The Vestiaires (Cloakrooms) of the Luxembourg Red Cross collect clothes in order to redistribute them free of charge to people in need or with modest incomes. By making a donation, everyone can support the work of the Red Cross and come to the aid of those in need.
The 2 Vestiaires in Luxembourg-City and Ettelbruck are managed by a team of volunteers who sort and arrange the clothes.
Beneficiaries are referred by social workers following a needs assessment. Donations are important to allow this service to function. Thanks to material donations and the financial income resulting from the selling of donations, the Luxembourg Red Cross is able to help thousands of vulnerable people every year.
Before coming to one of the many collection points, it is important to know what donations are useful. The Vestiaires mostly need warm jackets, jumpers, T-shirts, jeans, trainers and other shoes (tied in pairs) for men (small and medium sizes), clothes for children and teenagers as well as suitcases, backpacks, prams/strollers and baby accessories (clean and washed), toys, complete board games, bicycles, sportswear, umbrellas, sleeping bags, camping tents, bed sheets, bath linen.
Out of respect for the dignity of the persons for whom these objects are intended, only clean and undamaged items may be used. Items that do not meet these criteria may incur additional costs and cannot be accepted. The Red Cross thanks donors for their understanding.
Since the needs of the Vestiaires are given priority, if there is a surplus, donations can be sold in the Vintage Mo(o)d store. Profits are then used to buy items for the Vestiaires that are not covered by the donations (underwear, shoes, etc.).
If the donation meets the criteria set out above, simply drop it off at one of the many collection points available to the public.
